Adding Authorization - Multiple and Single Subject

It is possible to obtain a second credential without completing another teacher preparation program.  If you hold a valid Multiple Subject credential, you can obtain a Single Subject credential for secondary school teaching, without completing a full Single Subject credential program.  Likewise, if you hold a valid Single Subject credential, you can obtain a Multiple Subject credential for elementary school teaching, without completing a full Multiple Subject credential program.  This process is called Added Authorization.

Obtaining a second credential broadens your qualifications as a teacher and provides greater opportunities for teaching positions.

Qualified applicants (those who hold a valid Multiple Subject or Single Subject teaching credential) may obtain an additional Multiple Subject or Single Subject credential by completing the following requirements:

Multiple Subject credential holders seeking a Single Subject credential:

There are 2 requirements.

1.  Demonstrate Subject Matter competence.

    • passage of the appropriate CSET exam for the subject you intend to teach

    OR

    • Complete a state-approved Subject Matter Program.  Contact a credential advisor for information about a Subject Matter Program.

2.  Complete a 3-semester-unit course in methodology directly related to teaching in a departmentalized setting.

At CSUN, this course is SED 525.  This course has sections that are subject specific and it is recommended that you take the section for the subject you intend to teach.  For example, SED 525A is for Art; SED 525MA/L is for Math, SED 525EN is for English, etc.  There is also a course, SED 525 with no subject designation.  This is considered a generic methods course and will fulfill the methods course requirement for the Added Authorization.  The only section of SED 525 that is not acceptable and will not fulfill the methods requirement is SED 525ESL, do not take this course. For information on registering and enrolling in the secondary methods course see a credential advisor.

Single Subject credential holders seeking a Multiple Subject credential:

There are 3 requirements:

  1. Demonstrate Subject Matter Competence by passing the CSET: Multiple Subject exam
  2. Complete a 3-semester-unit course directly related to teaching in a self-contained classroom, excluding the methods of teaching reading.   At CSUN, EED 575 – Integrated Social Studies and Arts Curriculum and Methods (3 units) OR  EED 565S – Science Curriculum and Methods (2 units), and EED 565M – Mathematics Curriculum and Methods (3 units).  For information on registering and enrolling in these courses see a credential advisor.
  3. Complete course work in developing English language skills for beginning readers.  At CSUN this course is, EED 520 – Teaching Reading in the Elementary School (3 units),  OR   pass the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA) exam.

Single Subject credential holders seeking an additional subject authorization

There is 1 requirement:

  1. Demonstrate Subject Matter competence. There are two ways to fulfill this requirement:
  • passage of the appropriate CSET exam for the subject you intend to teach

    OR

  • Complete a state-approved Subject Matter Program. Contact a credential advisor for information about a Subject Matter Program.

If you hold a valid Single Subject credential you do not need to complete any additional methodology course work. All that is necessary to obtain additional subject authorizations onto your credential is to demonstrate subject matter competence. Furthermore ,you can add as many subject authorizations to your Single Subject credential as you wish by demonstrating subject matter competence for each of the subjects you wish to add and applying for the Added Authorization.

For official information about the Added Authorization click here. For any questions about the requirements or application procedures for the Added Authorization see a credential advisor.

You can apply for your second credential through the Credential Office at CSUN.  Your application will be evaluated  and electronically recommended to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).  A $25 processing fee is required and your credential will be officially issued in a much shorter time than applying directly.

Multiple and Single Subject Application: see "Credential Applications" for instructions and application

You can also apply directly to the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) , they will process your application and in several weeks, your new authorization will be issued.
