Is Summer Aid Available?
Yes. Limited financial aid is available for the summer term to students who qualify. Summer financial aid may consist of Federal Pell Grant, Tuition Fee Grant, and Federal Stafford Loans.
Do I Wait to Enroll Until I am Awarded Financial aid?
In order for financial aid to protect your summer enrollment until your summer aid is awarded, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- You must have a current 2009-10 FAFSA on file with an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of no greater than 4617 and your financial aid file must be complete (check your “To-Do List” on myNorthridge Portal). The deadline to submit required 2009-10 documents is June 16, 2010.
- You must be registered in at least half-time units.
- You must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).
If you do not meet the above criteria, you must pay your tuition and other fees from your own funds when you enroll. If you are awarded summer aid, and you accept any loans offered, it will serve as a reimbursement.
What Are the Requirements?
- To be considered for summer aid, you must be a continuing CSUN student AND have a 2009-10 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with the Financial Aid and Scholarship Department by May 14, 2010. If you already completed a 2009-10 FAFSA, you do NOT need to submit another one for summer aid.
- Summer 2010 is considered the last term for the 2009-2010 academic year. Summer financial aid availability depends on whether you have already used your full eligibility amount of Federal Pell Grant and Federal Stafford Loans during the fall 2009 and/or spring 2010 terms. The Tuition Fee Grant will be available to those who qualify or until funds are exhausted. Typically, to be considered for the Tuition Fee Grant, you must be a California Resident, maintain half-time enrollment, have an Expected Family Contribution of no greater than 4617 and not have any 3rd party sponsoring your summer tuition and other fees. Under limited conditions, Federal Pell Grant eligible students who enroll half-time and who have already received their full 2009-10 Federal Pell Grant eligibility during the fall and spring terms, may be eligible to receive an additional Pell Grant award during the summer 2010 term. Your file will be evaluated for the additional Federal Pell Grant eligibility at the time of summer awarding. Graduate students do not qualify for the Federal Pell Grant.
- Registering at the same time for all summer term classes in one or more sessions will facilitate the processing of your financial aid request. Your summer aid eligibility is based on your total units of enrollment in all summer sessions.
- The Financial Aid & Scholarship Department will begin awarding summer financial aid in early April. All students will be notified of their eligibility via their CSUN e-mail account. You must be enrolled at least half-time to be considered for summer aid. Please note that it may take up to 2 weeks to be awarded summer aid once you establish half-time summer enrollment.
How Does It Work?
- Enroll in at least half-time units to be eligible for a payment. Undergraduate and Credential students must enroll in at least 6 units and Graduate students must enroll in at least 4 units.
- Once you have registered for summer classes, you will be awarded any Pell Grant eligibility you have left and you will be considered for the Tuition Fee Grant based on your need. The maximum award for the Tuition Fee Grant will only cover tuition fees for 6 units if you are an Undergraduate or a Credential student and for 4 units if you are a Graduate student. If the Tuition Fee Grant is your only source of summer funding and your enrollment exceeds the units above, you will be responsible for paying the additional tuition fees. If you are awarded the Tuition Fee Grant and drop to less than 6 units as an Undergraduate or Credential student or to less than 4 units as Graduate student, your grant will be canceled. You will be responsible for paying what you owe to the University immediately. To be considered for a summer loan, you must submit a Summer Direct Loan Request Form by August 6, 2010 and be enrolled at least half time.
- Submit all required documents as listed in your "To-Do List" by June 16, 2010. Log on to the myNorthridge Portal, look under My Path to Graduation, and select Student Center (SOLAR). The "To Do List" is located on the right side of the page.
- Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP).
- Summer financial aid will begin disbursing the week of May 25th to those who qualify and weekly thereafter. Your must maintain half-time enrollment to be eligible for summer aid.
- Your summer financial aid award may not cover campus fees. Any balance due to the University must be paid immediately.
- Tuition and other fees, housing obligations and other costs (except parking) are deducted from your financial aid balance check.
How Much Am I Eligible to Receive?
The amount and type of summer aid you will be eligible for will depend on many factors, including grade level, need, and whether you have exhausted your eligibility for federal grants and loans during the regular 2009-2010 academic year. If you are unsure about your exact circumstance, you can always check with the Financial Aid and Scholarship Department. Although we will be unable to process your summer aid on a walk-in basis, you may see a counselor, during regular walk-in hours, to obtain an estimate of your summer aid eligibility.
